British Citizenship Test - After the Test

When do I get the results?

On completing your the test you will get your test results immediately. The test supervisor will tell you whether you have passed or not.


Is there a pass mark?

The pass mark is about is about 75%.

If I pass the British Citizenship Test (Life in the UK Test), what happens next?

If you have successfully passed the British Citizenship Test (Life in the UK Test), the test supervisor will give you a pass notification letter. The letter will contain the following information:

  • Your test date

  • The test supervisor

  • The test centre location

  • Your unique test ID number

When you have completed the citizenship ID form, you will need to attach you pass notification letter to the form and send it to the Home Office. The test centre will also send proof of your test results to the Home Office.


What happens if I lose my pass notification letter?

Your pass notification letter is very IMPORTANT! You will need to keep it in a safe place to send with your citizenship application. If you lose this letter, you will NOT be able to get another copy of it.


What happens if I fail the test?

Your test supervisor will inform you if you have failed the test. In this case you should not make an application for naturalisation as a British Citizen.


I've failed the test.  Can I take it again?

You can take the test again however it is wise to go back and study chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the 'Life in the United Kingdom' book. Once you feel confident you can re-take the test. Your results notification letter will give you feedback on the areas you need to look at again. You will need to book the test again at your local test centre. If however you feel you did not pass the test due to your level of English, you may consider attending a combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes course at your local further education college. You will not have to take the test again if you attend a combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship class
