What is the Britishness Test?

As of November 1, 2005, those who are applying for UK naturalization must pass a ‘Life in the UK test’ or the Britishness Test before they could submit the application for UK citizenship. In fact, as of April 2, 2007, the same criteria have been extended to include those applying for permanent residence as well. The UK government has proposed the Britishness test to ensure that all aspiring citizens of the country are knowledgeable about the heritage and culture of UK in general. The questions in the Britishness test can be anything from UK culture, law, history, and demography, to tenets of parliamentary democracy, employment issues, shifts in youth culture and even science and technology.

One must take the Britishness test just before applying for the naturalization as a British citizen, provided he/she meets all other requirements. The requirements also include passing ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) if you are not strong enough in English. You can assess your level of English proficiency from a local further education college. Those passing the Britishness test will be issued a letter stating that you have passed the test successfully, and it has to be produced along with the application for UK citizenship. However, it should be kept in mind that this letter of pass is the only document you have to prove that you have indeed passed the Britishness test. If you lose it, then you’ll be left with no other choice but to take the test one more time again.

For those who are not used to with the culture of UK, it is advisable to read ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship'. The same is also prescribed for those who have once failed in the exam before them rescheduling the dates for yet another attempt.

The Britishness test is usually a 24 question, multiple choice online exam based on the 2, 3, and 4th chapters of ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship' book. The exam must be completed within 45 minutes. But that is usually plenty of time and there is no need to rush through the exam. In fact, every candidate will get more than enough time to review the answers and make corrections if necessary. The pass rate is 75%. Finally, those suffering from various medical conditions will be allowed more time to complete the test, however the applicant must mention his/her illness while scheduling the test date itself. No change of status will be allowed thereafter.

Life In The UK Test

For the aspiring souls who want to settle down permanently in Britain for professional or personal reasons, it requires them to apply for the UK citizenship with the government. But, as of November 1, 2005, those who are applying for UK naturalization must pass a ‘Life in the UK test’ before they could actually submit the application for UK citizenship. The Life in the UK Test has been proposed by the UK government to ensure that those who are aspiring to become UK citizens indeed knows about the country and its culture and heritage, alongside a thorough knowledge of its tongue, English. As a result, the questions in the Life in the UK test can be anything from UK culture, history, law, and demography, to employment issues, tenets of parliamentary democracy, shifts in youth culture and even science and technology, and the candidate has to score a minimum percentage to stand passed in the test. Failed candidates may have to take the test again.

As mentioned already, knowledge of English must be proved before the authorities and for that, one may have to pass ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), if their mother tongue is not English. On passing the Life in the UK test, the candidate will be issued a letter stating the results, and it has to be produced along with the application for UK citizenship. Here, it must be kept in mind that the letter is the only proof that you have indeed passed the test, and if you lose it, then you may left with no other choice but to pay the fees and appear for the Life in the UK test once again from the scratch.

The Life in the UK test is usually a 24 question, multiple choice online exam based on the 2, 3, and 4th chapters of ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship' book. You can get that book from any bookstore or online. The exam must be completed within 45 minutes. But that is more than ample time for anybody under normal circumstances. For those suffering from various medical conditions/illnesses will be allowed more time to complete the test. However, in such cases, the applicant must mention his/her illness while scheduling the test date itself. No change of status will be allowed thereafter.

British Citizenship Test

British Citizenship Test, also referred to as Life in the UK Test, is highly important for those who wish to apply for UK settlement or citizenship, which is sometimes also known by such names as ‘permanent residence’ or ‘indefinite leave to remain.’

In other words, British Citizenship Test is inevitable for those who want to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen. The prime object of the test is to ensure whether the applicants have adequate knowledge on the UK law as well as the English language. However, before appearing for the test, it is important that you comply with all other requirements of naturalisation. For instance, in order to appear for the test, the candidates’ level of English language must be ESOL (English for Speakers for Other Languages) Entry 3.

It is quite easy to take the British Citizenship Test, as there are more than 90 test centers across the country, many of them with their own learning centers with facilities to enhance your computer knowledge and language. The test is administered by the Ufi Ltd for Home Office. Ufi Ltd is a non profit organization that conducts online tests and assessment. A sum of £34 has to be remitted in order to appear for the test. The test consists of about 24 multiple choice questions, which in turn is chosen by computer and previewed by the ministers. The duration of the test is 45 minutes, and the applicants are required to answer at least 18 correct answers. However, the duration is extended for the candidates with physical disabilities.

British Citizenship Test

Becoming a citizen of any country is not an immediate happening and more so if you want to become a British Citizen. People who want to permanently settle in Britain or become a British Citizen now have to undergo a British Citizen test that will gauge their knowledge about Britain and its people.

The logic behind introducing the test is that if a person wanted to become a citizen of a particular country it is necessary for him/her to show that he/she has full knowledge about the life in that country.

The British Citizen Test attempts to test the person’s knowledge about the life in UK and all the questions are based on the information given in the handbook called “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship”.
