British Citizenship - Test Background
Why
has the test been introduced?
The aim of the British Citizenship Test (Life in the UK Test) is to show that you know and have an understanding
of life within the United Kingdom. If you reside in England, Scotland,
Wales or Northern Ireland this can be done in two ways:
-
Taking British Citizenship Test - 'The Life in the UK Test'
-
Taking combined (ESOL) English for Other Languages
AND
citizenship classes
Who has to take the test?
You will need to take the British Citizenship Test (Life in the UK
Test) if:
-
You are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen and
your level of English is at the level of ESOL Entry 3 or above.
-
If your level of English is lower than ESOL Entry 3, you have
to attend a combined ESOL and citizenship class instead. You can get
information of these courses from your local education and community
college.
What are ESOL and citizenship classes?
The purpose of the ESOL and citizenship classes is to improve your
English and learn more about life within the United Kingdom. You can get
more information about the classes from your local education and
community college or call the Life in the UK Test Helpline on 0800 0154
245 which is run by the Home Office.
What language is the test available in?
The test is available ONLY in English at present, it will be offered in
Welsh and Scottish Gaelic in the future. However it will NOT be
available in any other languages.
When do I take the test?
You will have to take the test before applying for naturalisation as a
British Citizen. You can get more information on how to apply for
naturalisation from the Home Office website. Once you pass the test you
are given a letter that proves you have passed (Pass Notification
Letter). You will need to attach your letter along with a completed
citizenship application form and send it to the Home Office. You should
apply for naturalisation as soon as you have successfully passed your
British Citizenship Test (Life in the UK Test).
Where can I find out more information about the
test?
If after reading
this you require further clarification, or still have more questions
please contact the Life in the UK Helpline on 0800 0154 245 which is run
